The 4 C's – and the 5th that sets us apart
Carat, colour, clarity and cut decide a diamond's beauty, rarity and price. The fifth C – consistency – is what H B Shah has been known for since 1924.
Cut
Cut decides how well a diamond returns light — its brilliance, fire and scintillation. Graded Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor, it is the one C shaped entirely by the cutter's skill.
Colour
Graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). D–F are colourless, G–J near colourless. Natural fancy colours sit outside this scale and are valued for intensity.
Clarity
Measures internal inclusions and surface blemishes under 10× magnification — from Flawless (FL) and Internally Flawless (IF) through VVS, VS and SI to Included (I1–I3).
Carat
The weight of a diamond; one carat equals 0.2 grams. Price rises sharply at popular weights, so stones just under a milestone can offer excellent value.
Consistency
The 4 C's required to be considered for purchase of diamonds are carats, colour, clarity and cut. At H B Shah we believe there is a 5th 'C' which differentiates us – Consistency. Every parcel matches the last, so your production never has to adjust.
